Attorney Profile

Attorney Debra F. Schneider

392183_0Debra F. Schneider is a passionate, experienced family law and education law attorney serving Hackensack, Bergen County and all of New Jersey with quality legal services. She graduated from Rutgers University Law School, passed the N.J. Bar, and was sworn in, all in the year 1978.

Debra has always advocated for the rights of those who cannot advocate for themselves. Whether that be children, abused or neglected children, victims of domestic violence or persons who cannot afford an attorney, Ms. Schneider believes that every client is as important as the last.

Throughout her years as an attorney, she has volunteered countless hours for Shelter Our Sisters, now known as the Center for Hope and Safety. The organization’s goal is to provide shelter, counseling, and other assistance to victims of domestic violence. She also has offered her services to Alternatives to Domestic Violence Northeast Legal Services, providing free representation to those in need. Attorney Schneider has also volunteered countless hours for New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for Justice.

Aside from her immense experience with pro bono work, Attorney Schneider has also given countless hours as a panel number for many years on the Bergen County Early Settlement Panel and previously on the Passaic County Early Settlement Panel. The panelists are chosen because they are experienced family law practitioners in the county where they serve. The purpose is to recommend to litigants and their attorneys how best to resolve their cases without litigation.

Ms. Schnieder is an ethical attorney. She was appointed by the N.J. Supreme Court to serve on the Fee Arbitration Committee, a committee that rules on fee disputes between attorneys and their former clients. She started as a member of this committee and thereafter became a committee chairperson.

Depending on your circumstances, Ms. Schneider will mediate or litigate your case. She handles all aspects of family law matters, including alimony, child support, child custody, property distribution, and prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. Debra F. Schneider, Esq. also has extensive experience in domestic violence matters and in matters involving the Division of Child Protective Services (formerly DYFS) when children are abused and neglected.

Attorney Schneider is a trained mediator who has been approved by the Administrative Office of the Courts for inclusion on the official court roster of family law mediators in New Jersey.

Ms. Schneider has the distinction of having a publishing case, S.M. v. A.W., having litigated the appeal of this case to the New Jersey Superior Court, Appellate Division. She was successful in litigating the appeal on behalf of a grandmother whose granddaughter was removed from her daughter and was living with a foster parent. The appellate court reversed the decision of the trial court, ruling that the grandmother should have custody of this child.

In addition to her law practice, Attorney Schneider has been an adjunct professor at Bergen Community College for the last ten years, teaching in the paralegal studies and business department. Ms. Schneider thoroughly enjoys sharing her knowledge of the law with her students and seeing them succeed.
